Death

The guy on the ground is Triboulet, the court jester to the King of Naples and as it happens, the author of this book. You can tell that it's Triboulet because of the jester staff lying next to him: that's the stick with a head on it. He asked for a discussion with Death, but as you can see, Death wasn't too keen. There's no mistaking Death: he's depicted as a skeleton with a flapping cape (his shroud), a scythe and an arrow. He is aiming the arrow at Triboulet's heart.

💀
In other words, you'll never win a discussion with Death; you'll always come off worst. It's a typical mediaeval topic. This was an era when plague was a constant threat. So a discussion with Death was pointless: Death always decided whether you would live or die.

📖
This book was produced around 1480, some 540 years ago. It tells the story of a discussion with Death in the form of a poem. Triboulet wrote the poem. He was the court jester to the King of Naples. Being a jester involved more than just juggling and telling jokes. He also had to arrange for plays to be performed at court, many of them with the King in the leading role.
