Something in my eye

Hey! I think I've got something in my eye. Could you have a look? Unfortunately for Saint Leodegar, that isn't what's going on here. Bright red blood is streaming down his face as someone carefully drills his eyes out.

Leodegar became Bishop of Autun in Burgundy in 659. You can tell by the long cassock, short cape, scarf and mitre that he's wearing. What you can't see is that he was also advisor to Queen Bathild, and her son Childeric. But when Childeric was murdered by the bloodthirsty Ebroin, who wanted to be king himself, things didn't work out well for Leodegar. Ebroin went after all of Childeric's allies and put Autun under siege. Leodegar surrendered himself to the enemy to save the rest of the population. The cruel Ebroin had Leodegar's eyes drilled out, which is what you can see in this picture. But as if that weren't enough, he also cut off his lips and part of his tongue. Gruesome or what?

Leodegar would have survived, but Ebroin wanted to get rid of him. So he accused Leodegar of murdering Childeric and had him beheaded. Let's hope that after coming to such a grisly end, Leodegar drew comfort from knowing that he was made a saint two years after his death, and was immortalised in this book some 500 years later.
